Types of Oolong Tea

Oolong - meaning 'black dragon', is a traditional Chinese tea. It is subject to about !0%-70% in oxidation during its fermentation process; somewhere between green and black. Oolong enjoys great popularity in Chinese restaurants.

The cultivation and manufacture of classic oolong teas are restricted to a small area of Southeastern China - Fujian and Guangdong Provinces, as well as the island of Taiwan.

The many different types of oolong tea are classified according to the time of picking during harvest, the areas in which they are grown and the variety of Camellia Sinensis plant from which they come. Each cultivation region has its own unique flavor and traditional way of processing the tea.

An outstanding quality of oolong tea is its aroma, as it contains the highest concentration of essential oils of any tea types.

It is said that there are four most famous oolong teas and these are; Wuyi Rock tea, Anxi Tieguanyin tea, Phoenix Dancong tea and Formosa Oolong tea. Wuyi and Tieguanyin teas are so highly regarded that they are often included in the 10 Famous Chinese Teas.

Health benefits of Oolong tea

The focus has been on green tea when it comes to studies made on the health benefits of tea, but it is clear that oolong teas impart the same benefits, although arguably to a slightly lesser degree, due to the fermentation process being a little lengthier than that of green teas.

Oolong tea reduces the risk of heart disease, lowers cholesterol levels, stimulate metabolism, prevents dental decay, strengthens capillaries, eases arthritis pain, improves mental focus, assists in inhibiting Alzheimer's disease, boosts the immune system, fights infection, improves skin health, increases bone density and improves your memory.

Like green tea, oolong tea can also help in the fight against cancer.

Since oolong teas cover an enormous breadth of flavours, everyone can find an oolong tea to suit their palate.
