Truth About The Side Effects of Green Tea

side effects of green tea

What is the truth about the side effects of green tea?

What are the side effects of green tea - this amazing miracle drink that is threatening coffee's dominance in western world cafes? Well, caffeine is being closely scrutinised by the science and health communities. Caffeine, one of the most witch-hunted substances of the seventies and eighties, is known to be a stimulator of the central nervous system and large muscles.

This presence of this substance in tea is really the only negative side effect of drinking green tea.

Caffeine dilates blood vessels, increases heart rate, increases metabolism and helps to move wastes around the body.

In extreme quantities, caffeine can be toxic, producing irritability, nervousness, insomnia and even mental confusion. An advantage is that dilation of the blood vessels provides a cooling effect in hot climates.

It is important to moderate caffeine intake, particularly during pregnancy and breast feeding as caffeine can cross the placenta and will appear in breast milk.

You need to drink 2-3 cups of tea to ingest the same amount of caffeine as in 1 cup of coffee. Of course, much depends upon the type of tea and coffee. Where tea is grown and the manufacturing process are the main variables.

Black teas and Oolong teas contain more caffeine than green teas because of the fermenation process they undergo. If you infuse tea leaves for a short time, this will cut down the caffeine that is infused yet again.

The research into the effects of tea on the body is still not conclusive, but there is lots of optimism about the many health benefits that tea drinking offers.

It may well turn out that green tea is one of the healthiest beverages of our time!
