are almost all to do with the presence of caffeine in green tea leaves. A brewed cup of green tea (6oz.) contains about 30mg of caffeine.

This is far less than in regular coffee. Green tea is now the most popular drink worldwide after water.

Studies have shown that green tea has numerous health benefits and current research is revealing that green tea may in fact, become the most beneficial beverage of our modern time.

Despite this, not everyone will react favourably to drinking green tea on a regular basis. Below are a list of side effects that may result if you fall into one of the mentioned categories.

  • If you are sensitive to caffeine you should not drink much green tea as even its relatively small content of caffeine may cause insomnia, anxiety, excessive energy or restlessness and hyper-tension.

    You can use green tea supplements instead; 2 250mg pills contain only about 5 to 6 mg of caffeine.

  • You should not drink too much green tea.

    Nutritionists recommend 3 to 4 cups of tea daily to receive its health benefits. If you drink over 5 or 6 cups daily, you may experience insomnia, an irregular heart rate, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness and loss of appetite.

  • Pregnant women should restrict their intake of green tea to 3 cups a day, or use supplements instead while pregnant.

    This is because caffeine can cross the placenta and affect the foetus.

  • If breastfeeding, it would be better to abstain from green tea totally because the baby's sleep may be disturbed through ingesting caffeine.
  • If you have a weak heart, tendency to anxiety or panic attacks, sensitive stomach or kidney disease, it would be sensible to use green tea cautiously.
  • Scientific studies show that green tea is non-toxic in both acute dosage and in long-term high dosage.


    But as with all substances and foods, drink green tea in moderation and enjoy its taste, safe in the knowledge that you will be getting all the amazing health benefits of this 'miracle' drink.
