Super Sencha Tea

sencha tea

Sencha tea is the most popular tea in Japan, and represents about 80 percent of the tea produced in Japan. The tea beverage is made from the dried tea leaves. This is as opposed, for example, to matcha, which is powdered Japanese green tea.

About Sencha Tea

The finest types of this tea also have names derived from the shape of the leaves. These are called Spider-Led or Needle-Leaf teas.

Sencha literally means 'steamed tea'. This is the everyday tea of Japan and is drunk at anytime. The sweet green leaves are cylindrically shaped and dried following traditional Japanese techniques.

Teas from the earlier part of the season tend to be richer and more fragrant, whereas teas from the end of the season tend to be stronger and grassier. There are many types of Sencha tea and you can buy them from some supermarkets or speciality tea stores.

All green teas have powerful antioxidant properties due to their powerful polyphenols that are mostly kept intact during the processing. Common antioxidants are vitamin C and vitamin E. However, the antioxidant levels of green tea are a hundred times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times more effective than vitamin E in promoting immunity.

The most potent anti-oxidants in green tea are called catechins. While catechins are also present in black tea, green tea contains a higher quantity of catechins.
