Macha Green Tea
Macha green tea
What is Macha powdered green tea? Macha is premium green tea powder from Japan used for drinking as tea or as an ingredient in cooking. Green teas are grown throughout the world but macha is unique to Japan. It has been at the center of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony for hundreds of years.
Chlorophyll and amino acids give macha its unique rich taste - an initial bitter taste, followed by a lingering sweetness. Made in the traditional Japanese style, whisked with water, macha is a full-bodied green tea. The intensity of the experience compares to one’s first taste of dark chocolate or red wine.
When added as an ingredient, the taste of macha becomes more subtle. It adds the flavor and color of green tea to every smoothie, latte or dessert.
Types of Macha
Usucha macha is usually served singly during the tea ceremony, and is commonly used. Usucha usually comes from the sprouts of tea plants that are less than 15 years old. It means "thin tea", which refers to its consistency when mixed in comparison to koicha.
Koicha is used to make "thick tea", is finer and more expensive. This tea comes from the shade-grown buds of young leaves of plants that are a minimum of 30 years old. Since a thicker consistency is desired, more powder is used.
It is said that the health benefits of macha are greater than drinking green tea because the whole leaf is ingested, not just the water in which it is brewed.
One glass of macha green tea is the equivalent of 10 glasses of steeped green tea in terms of its nutritional value and antioxidant content.
Include it in your recipes and see whether it makes a difference!
