Green tea pregnancy? Can drinking green tea really enhance chances of conception?
While green tea has been studied for its numerous health
benefits, this is at least one area of interest that needs
more attention! There are many conflicting opinions on this.
How can drinking green tea increase your chances of conceiving?
A study done by the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program
in Oakland, California concluded that the odds of
conceiving doubled for women who drank more than one
half cup of green tea per day (American Journal
of Public Health, 1998).
The other tested caffeinated beverages didn't give these results, so caffeine wasn't
deemed the causing agent.
The
possibility was debated that the polyphenols and hypoxanthine
found in tea, resulted in a greater number of viable
embryos, and increased maturation and fertilizability of
oocytes (immature eggs).
How can drinking green tea decrease fertility? Tannic acids found in green tea, are known
to cause fertility problems and greater risk of
miscarriage.
EGCG, the main disease-fighting antioxidant in green tea responsible for inhibiting the
growth of tumors, might also affect the blood vessel growth
of a developing embryo.
So - is it wise to keep drinking green tea while wanting to conceive?
The best advice is to check with your doctor first and do as much research as you can from authentic sources to determine if green tea is going to be good for you or not...
What we DO know, is that certainly when you become a mother, you should drink green tea daily for all of its many health benefits!
