Green Tea Caffeine Content?
What is the amount of green tea caffeine content?
What is the amount of green tea caffeine content? And how does this compare with other teas and coffees?
We know that green tea does contain a little caffeine (about half of a cup of coffee) and that caffeine can be toxic if taken in large quantities.
However, the amount of caffeine in green tea is so little that it could be considered a plus factor, instead of a negative.
This is because caffeine has some good effects on our body; it heightens metabolic rate, helps thermogenesis (heat production), dilates blood vessels (has a cooling effect in hot climates) and helps to move wastes through the body.
For most people, 400-450g of caffeine daily does not increase the risk of heart disease, hypertension or have adverse effects on the foetus or pregnancy. So the amount of green tea caffeine content is quite 'safe' for most people.
It is, however, inportant to limit the amount of caffeine when pregnant because caffeine can cross the placenta.
So, to be safe, only drink 1 cup of green tea a day when pregnant.
The amount of caffeine in tea depends on the variety, where grown and how processed.
Below are some comparisons for you to look at:
black tea, loose leaves ot tea bag (brewed 1 min)......9-33mg.
black tea, loose leaves (brewed 3 mins)...................20-46mg.
oolong tea, loose leaves (maximum infusion time)......12-55mg.
green tea, loose leaves (maximum infusion time) .......8-16mg.
iced tea (12 oz. can)...........................................22-36mg.
decaffeinated tea................................................4mg.
Starbucks caffe latte (16ozs.) ..............................150mg.
Classic Coca-Cola (12ozs.)....................................35mg.
So, how much is a 'safe', moderate amount of caffeine to drink daily?
Well, on an average, 220mg of caffeine which is equivalent to 2 cups of coffee is a moderate amount.
